In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, offering support to affected communities is crucial. Many of the areas affected are not only home to many, but are also popular tourist destinations including Jamaica, Grenada, the Cayman Islands and Mexico. We’re all about conscious and sustainable travel, and being this kind of traveler means supporting the destinations we visit even after we’ve left. We put together a brief guide with information about Hurricane Beryl and how you can help.

ABOUT HURRICANE BERYL

• According to several news sources, Hurricane Beryl is the earliest category five Atlantic hurricane in records going back around 100 years. This early start to hurricane season could indicate an even more damaging hurrican season for the Carribbean and other areas.

• On Tuesday, July 2nd Hurrican Beryl first made landfall in the island of Carriacou in Grenada. The most sustained damage was on Carriacou and Petit Martinque. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were also affected along with Barbados and a number of other Caribbean islands. The storm then passed the Cayman Islands and Jamaica, regaining strength as it hit the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. It’s now on path to hit the Gulf Coast of Texas.

• 11 people have been killed, many are injured and some remain missing, homes are without power and there has been extreme damage to infrastructure.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

• Give directly to the Government of Grenada’s National Relief Fund. This fund will help to provide critical relief items, and importantly, will support recovery and rebuiliding efforts.

• World Central Kitchen (WCK) has quickly set up operations providing food and water to communities in Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica. WCK works with local chefs and community leaders to enhance other aid efforts. Donate here.
